Ever wanted to take a vacation? Visit a different
country and experience the culture, art & customs? How about traveling to a
new part of the U.S. and learning how others live?
Have you ever wanted to help someone
less fortunate than yourself ?
 |
Combine these elements and you have a Volunteer
Vacation. You, your family, any group or organization can gain the rewarding
and profound experience of contributing to the well being of others.
Some groups have delivered school supplies to children in Belize, while
others have taken soap, shampoo and medical provisions to an orphanage in
Honduras. Habitat for Humanity builds houses in Mexico and aids the
impoverished right here in the United States.
When your daily work is
done you can visit local attractions and learn more about the people, art, and
customs or go for a bike ride, hike, walk, roam around a bit, or just hang out.

Habitat for Humanity: Habitat welcomes all
people regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or any other difference, to
build simple, decent, affordable houses with those who lack adequate shelter.
Homeowners and volunteers build the houses themselves, under trained
supervision. A new Habitat house is completed somewhere in the world every 24
minutes. Habitat affiliates work locally in communities around the world to
select and support homeowners, organize volunteers and coordinate house
building. Check it out for yourself. www.habitat.org
Global Citizens Network:
Global Citizens Network (GCN) recognizes the interdependence of people around
the world. Through cooperative efforts, individuals of all cultures have the
ability to make a difference in their community and their world. GCN sends
short-term teams of volunteers to other cultures where participants immerse
themselves in the daily life of the community. GCN creates a worldwide network
of people and organizations committed to addressing global issues. www.globalcitizens.org
Earthwatch Institute:
Earthwatch Institute engages people worldwide in scientific field research
and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a
sustainable environment. www.earthwatch.org
National Parks Service:
While most people think simply "national parks" when they think of the National
Park Service - we do a lot more! The NPS works with communities to
preserve and care for neighborhood treasures. We
work with teachers to create unique opportunities for students to
learn about history, experience science coming
alive, and witness nature at some of the most amazing spots on earth.
You can also find out how to help care for your national parks by
working or volunteering with the National Park
Service.

A.W.A.R.E (A Watershed Awareness River Expedition):
AWARE identifies and addresses water quality concerns, non-point source
pollutants, and riparian protection issues. AWARE organizes creek sweeps,
watershed festivals, and is responsible for the roadside signs notifying
travelers of leaving a watershed or entering into another. You can be connected
to AWARE through Volunteer Solutions powered by the United Way. Volunteer
Solutions is a Matching Application that helps individuals, nonprofit agencies,
corporations, event organizers, and Volunteer Centers get connected with
opportunities in their community. Use a powerful search engine to locate a
geographically targeted opportunity that matches your social interests, skills
and time requirements. www.volunteersolutions.org
American Hiking
Society: Whether your interest is getting dirty, getting fit or simply
getting outside, we've got exciting opportunities that engage you in your local
trail community. No experience is necessary. There is a wide variety of tasks
on each trip, and projects are rated from 'easy' to 'extremely strenuous'. On
an American Hiking Society Volunteer Vacation, you visit stunning backcountry
locations to construct or rebuild footpaths, cabins and shelters. In the
process, you meet new people, explore canyons, peaks and valleys, enjoy quiet
evenings around a fire and come home refreshed and rejuvenated. Volunteer
Vacations are more fun than work! www.americanhiking.org
